“I listen to my parents more.”

“My children are behaving more responsibly and helping with chores around the house.”

Strengthening Families 10-14 is a NO COST, seven-week evidence-based program designed to help families with children and teens ages 10-14.

The seven two-hour sessions, provided in either Spanish or English, are led by two certified facilitators, with separate sessions for youth and parents and then families together. Families bond over a light meal and childcare for younger siblings (up to age 9) is provided. After completing the seven sessions, families are also offered four optional booster sessions.

Developed by the Iowa State University, Strengthening Families 10-14 engages families and communities in building five areas called “protective factors” known to help families navigate challenging situations.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Communicate more effectively
  • Solve problems and bond together as a family
  • Reduce the potential of alcohol, tobacco and drug use
  • Grow and have fun together

Every family system can benefit from these classes, no matter their challenges or habits.

Proven results mean happier and healthier families and communities.

Communities benefit from Strengthening Families 10-14 too. Research shows for every dollar spent on this program, $9.60 comes back to the community as benefits in the form of less jail time, less time off from work, and less time in treatment.

Preventing Underage Substance Use Before It Starts

“Treat a child as if he’s already the person he is capable of becoming.” – Haim Ginott

When teens experiment with alcohol and other drugs, it can slide out of control into a bigger problem. By creating environments and family connections that give teens traction, we can prevent substance use from sliding out of control. North Range Behavioral Health believes that strong relationships and communication skills in a family system can help.

Strengthening Families 10-14 has proven to be effective in reducing long-term effects of substance use and mis-use in children and teens. Our classes help families explore how they can improve their communication and allows both parents and teens to practice better skills through interactive activities.

The skills learned help address teen substance use and other behavior concerns, strengthen parent/child relationships and communication, increase academic success, and prevent violence and aggressive behavior at home and at school.
